For a very long time, we've been wanting to help Kenden rid himself of the ugly little habit we helped him start...the pacifier. We'd heard nightmare stories of how friends' kids had resisted, gotten helpful hints on how to have him wean off of it....for some reason, we'd held out for a long time (okay, *I* held out...hard to admit your baby is growing up!). I've been telling Kenden for a very long time about the Binky Fairy, and how she comes and picks up all a kid's old binkies, leaves them a cool new toy, and takes the binkies to all the new babies in the hospital! For a long time, he wasn't buying it. He'd see a cool toy, I'd mention the binky fairy, and he'd say, "No, I'll wait for Santa." Smart kid.
It is pretty common knowledge that Kenden is just short of obsessed with Transformers...so when this new Transformers 2 movie was due to come out, of course a ton of new Transformers toys were released. He had his eye on the new Bumblebee Cannon Arm, and so I re-explained to him about the binky fairy, and how she waits for when the kid is ready, and doesn't take he binkies until they are, so it was his choice. Once he decided, I told him, mommy and daddy would tell the fairy to come.
He must have thought on this good and hard...Jeff and I went to a concert that night, and when we came back, our sitter Brianna told us that he'd been pretty upset at bedtime, which wasn't normal, but we all chalked it up to him being tired. Jeff asked him the next morning why he'd been upset and he said it was because he'd wanted to have the Binky Fairy come that night!
So, the deed was done...we allowed him to go to bed with one binky, but told him when he woke up, the last binky would be gone, but he'd have his new stuff in its place....so here he is with his treasure! A tear-free transition to a binky-free life! He only asked for his binky one time after this....but now he brags about what a big boy he is now!
